We used Kavi for years before it was acquired.  And it worked fine for what we needed.  With the changes after the acquistion, not so much.  We had specific needs, and they just weren't being met.  Not that the staff doesn't try to please, but its development went in another direction. 

I would encourage you to look at it.  If you haven't ever had a community, it might be what you need.  It just didn't evolve into the right platform for our needs.
