Topicbox is a low-cost listserv that my org has been using for 3+ years. The cost is based on the number of active users.

While members can unsubscribe from any group, staff must manually add users to discussion groups. Users can easily message all group members by emailing a special email address. Users can also read messages at the Topicbox website and search for messages by search terms and/or via other search criteria.

Topicbox is meeting the bare minimum needs of a listserv for us but there are frustrations with Topicbox which include:

  • users can’t self-service their group subscriptions;
  • we can't customize the welcome email that members receive after adding someone to a group; we can't customize the subject line or first line of emails to remind users that their replies go to all;
  • we can't import a list of member emails in order to easily replace current members;
  • we can’t have users click/accept listserv usage terms before participating;
  • and we can’t export messages in order to perform data analysis and/or to look for frequently used words or terms.
  • Lastly, there’s no integration (API) available to connect to our AMS
